Foundation Portfolio evaluation

Preliminary Task

Name: x2 Group 4

Names of other group members: Kash, James, Gemma and Gabi. :)

What We learnt about the Cameras and Editing software during the preliminary task!

We learnt how to use the tripod effectively and also when to use the hand held camera technique. Using our skills learnt from our trip with Mrs Smith and Mr Fennel to the ‘Garment District’ area, we could frame our shots so that they would look professional. We also learnt that it was best to use the tripod when panning the camera, to follow the action more steadily. Hand held shots were used when filming shots which didn’t have much movement but we cut this out because it looked messy and un-professional as the camera was shakey.

In the filming and editing of our project, Some aspects worked well, however other aspects could have been improved!

During filming, we wasted no time in beginning to film. Since nobody was afraid of the camera we could progress onto the preliminary straight away. Mrs Smith said our filming was great, however we did break the 180 rule on the shot reverse shot clip. During editing, Kash and James were very experienced, and were teaching Gabi and Gemma, so that they would soon become experts too! Some problems were to do with the audio when capturing the film from the camera, but this problem was solved soon after.

How we have used a shot/ reverse shot combination in our film!

Our shot reverse shot sequence was filmed from over the shoulder shots of Kash and James’ interview. We filmed it from James’ shoulder first, and then had to film from Kash’ opposite shoulder, so we didn’t break the 180 degree rule again.

How we achieved match cuts during the editing process!

We didn’t use any match cuts during our preliminary task.

What we learnt from breaking the 180 degree rule!

We accidentily broke it and then had to go and re-shoot half of the clip, switching the shoulder for which we didn’t shoot from previously. We learnt to watch over our clips in more detail to avoid this problem in the future.
